Job Description

Universal Air is seeking a qualified and motivated Part-Time In-House Lawyer to support its legal and regulatory operations.  The successful candidate will report to the Chief Risk Officer and will work closely with the Finance and Risk team and external advisors to manage legal matters relevant to the Company’s operations.

This position is ideal for a warranted lawyer with at least 3 years of experience, preferably with exposure to aviation law or regulated industries.  The role offers flexible working hours (12-15 hours per week) with a hybrid or in-office arrangement depending on business needs.

Remuneration will reflect the candidate’s experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide sound legal advice on day-to-day operations, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and aviation-related matters.
  • Compile, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts including charter and ACMI contracts, aircraft leasing, financing agreements, service-level agreements, and NDAs.
  • Work with the business to review and negotiate supplier contracts, with a practical focus on maintenance, aircraft parts and engineering tooling contracts.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with Maltese and international aviation regulations, including EASA, Transport Malta, and other applicable frameworks.
  • Support company secretarial tasks, shareholder resolutions, and compliance with statutory obligations under Maltese law, including liaising with the MBR and preparing relevant documentation.
  • Identify legal risks and propose strategies to mitigate exposure across operations, transactions, and commercial engagements.
  • Collaborate with external legal counsel, aviation authorities, and internal departments (such as finance, operations, and HR) to ensure legal alignment.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on aviation legislation, international treaties, and evolving regulatory standards.
  • Monitor and advise on compliance with data protection laws (including GDPR), oversee data processing agreements, and support privacy impact assessments.
  • Lead legal risk assessments and mitigation strategies in response to Schrems II/III rulings, ensuring lawful international data transfers and alignment with evolving EU data protection requirements.
  • Other duties as may be required by company management.

Qualifications, Skill & Experience required

  • Fully warranted lawyer licensed to practice in Malta.
  • Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience, ideally with exposure to aviation, transport, finance, or commercial law.
  • Prior in-house experience will be considered an asset.
  • Excellent command of English is essential; Maltese language skills are advantageous.
  • Strong skills in contract drafting and interpretation, particularly in technical or regulated environments.
  • Capable of clearly communicating legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Able to prioritise tasks and work independently within a flexible, part-time schedule.
  • Understanding of business operations and ability to align legal advice with company objectives.
